One Man’s Goldfield: the story of the Horseshoe Bend Diggings, William Rigney and Somebody’s Darling
It would appear that Rigney’s willingness to attack through the press continued for
some time – in response to one such attach the following appears in the Tuapeka
Times in 1897:
“CORRESPONDENCE. A DECISIVE REPLY. (To the Editor.)
Sir,— l was somewhat surprised to notice in your issue of 27th March another of Mr
Rigney's lying concoctions which are so congenial to his nature. In his previous letter he
stated that I arranged to let Mr Kirkpatrick wash away the road if he would vote for me.
…..the statements in Mr Rigney’s letter are therefore deliberate, unmitigated and
49
unblushing falsehoods and are all of his own concoction. I am, etc” . [link to original
record in Papers Past]
If one picture appears of Rigney it is of a dogged, stubborn man with no fear of any
person, office or challenge.
